Anca Vraniantu (Romania)

I met Anca by mistake at the train statioin in Budapest during my trip Hungary, Slovakia & Autria trip in 2004 when I had to ask, who I thought was a local, help with my train ticket to find out which platform I was leaving from to go to Bratislava, Slovakia.

Anca very kindly translated for me and escorted me to the train. During this walk, we got speaking and I told her that I was on a small trip for my birthday and that I was heading to Bratislava, where Anca replied, "That's where I live".

So hence started a conversation that was to last the full 3hr train journey. Being the gent that I am, I sat in the next carriage and 10 minutes into the journey, Anca came through with a piece of paper which had helpful sayings in Slovak, which is an incredibly hard lanuage, along with their translations. Well i ended up inviting her into the carriage I was sitting and there began our friendship.

Anca was visiting Budapest for the weekend to see her boyfriend and luckily for me, she got the same train back as luck would have it, the youth hostels in Bratislava were miles outside the town and the price of hotels were extordionate. Anca then very kindly offered to put me up for a few days in her flat, which I grabbed with two hands.

One thing that sticks out in my mind was the very minute I walked in your flat, I remember you asking if I wanted anything washed, and out came the contents of my rucsack, then when you asked if I wanted something to eat, out came the contents of your fridge. Shame you never asked if I needed some money ha-ha.

Anca then became my tour guide around Bratislava and since has become a very dear friend to me, one which I have had to ask help for recently, and without a thought, she was there to rescue the day.

Anca, this page is for you and for the gratitute I have for your help recently. Long live our friendship.

I have added some photos of our time together in Bratislava plus there is a short video about Romania, entitled, A World Without Romania.
